Incredible Harris Vacations

Is your family musing on having a holiday in Britain? While the largest numbers of tourists visiting the U.K. decide to stay in popular places like London, other folk prefer to visit places such as Scotland. In the following article I talk about the Isle of Harris and the reasons why it is such a great destination for vacations.

Although London might be home to some of the most stunning galleries and museums in the whole of the United Kingdom  and some of the world’s most popular tourist attractions  the capital city can not appeal to all types of visitor.

Some people prefer vacations which are less hectic while others prefer vacations with more excitement for example sporting vacations. Interestingly the island of Harris, in the Western Isles (or Outer Hebrides) of Scotland, is perfect for both types of person.

Like many other people staying on the beach for most of my summer vacation isn’t my idea of fun. Please don’t misunderstand me, I really do enjoy relaxing on a beach, and Harris definitely is home to some of the most breathtaking beaches in Scotland, however, I also like to visit other places on my vacation. I like to soak in the atmosphere, I also like to experience the local culture and especially enjoy sampling the food. To be honest I just like to experience something new each year and I try very hard attempting to find somewhere or something 100% unique and different. This is more than likely why I so thoroughly enjoy visiting the island in the Hebrides called the Isle of Harris and why I often choose to hire a self catering house on the Isle of Harris.

One of the primary reasons people visit the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the the culture and landscape of the Isles. The Isle of Harris culture has, over time been powerfully influenced by the English, Scottish, Norse and Celtic races. Nowadays the majority of people speak in the Gaelic language and though some talk in English, it is often their second language. The inhabitants of the Isle of Harris are amongst the most friendly on the planet and the hospitality is well known across the globe. The Harris folk are extremely proud of the amazingly beautiful Harris countryside and go to some length to keep the island very tidy so it is vitally important to clear up any of your litter.

It is incredibly important that you remember that discarded litter doesn’t just make the island look unsightly it is also highly dangerous to native wildlife.

Another vital point to learn is that the roads on Harris are rather different to those found on the Scottish mainland stretches of single track road are common and you will need to know how to use passing places to allow traffic to pass from ahead and behind. Simply come to a halt on the left side of the road. But, If the vehicle wishing to pass is large and cumbersome and the passing place is to the right hand side of the road you can carefully pull over into to it to let the large vehicle pass easily but be careful not to end up off the road too much.
